Veteran documentary filmmaker and hipster Lech Kowalski made this film about his friend and hard-partying rock god Johnny Thunders, member of legendary proto-punk band the New York Dolls. Through archive footage and interviews with such musicians as Dee Dee Ramone and Sylvain Sylvain, the film details Thunders stint with the Dolls, the formation of his other band, the Heartbreakers; his rise to fame, particularly in Japan; his descent into heroin addiction, and the mysterious circumstances of his death in a New Orleans hotel room in 1991. Born to Lose: The Last Rock 'n' Roll Movie also contains some rarely seen concert performances in Max's Kansas City and the Mudd Club.

Johnny Thunders was so successful at not being a success, that in the end he walked into a shootout between himself and the myth that he created.

An embarrassment of rock 'n' roll riches in every sense of the word, Born to Lose is a wildly undisciplined and historically essential documentary on guitarist Johnny Thunders. Longtime chum Kowalski first filmed Thunders for the docu D.O.A. in 1981 and subsequently cast him as Jesus in an unfinished 1982 pic Stations of the Cross. Footage is culled from some 500 hours of material, much of it invaluable vintage perfs by Thunders and peers in such venues as Max's Kansas City and the Mudd Club. Key to the work's viability is judicious yet Draconian pruning of interview segs, which range from the sublime to the incoherent.
